Job Description: Deaf Development Worker (DDW)

Reporting to IDC Board of Trustees/Directors.
Salary for 1 part time deaf development worker - NJC Scale 5 Spinal Point 11 at £24,441.90 per annum (Pro-Rata) for 22.5 hours / 3 days per week ( including 12.8% emp NICs, ILW and 5% pension) - £14,992.95 (this includes employer contributions)

Aim
To set up a Islington Deaf club that will enable Deaf people in Islington to come together to tackle social isolation, exclusion and discrimination by providing information and advice on key welfare, housing and community care entitlements, create opportunities for mutual support and self advocacy and campaign on Deaf issues.

Objectives
The Deaf Development Worker will meet the following project objectives:
1. To work with the Islington Deaf Campaign to set up a borough wide Islington Deaf Club. The club will meet at least monthly and provide a range of activities including: information exchanges, guest speakers, social events, information and advice sessions and training opportunities for members.
2. To carry out a rolling programme of outreach work with the Deaf community to publicise the club and ensure it is providing the types of activities and services Deaf people need.
3. To support and service the Islington Deaf Campaign (IDC) and the enable it to provide strategic leadership of the project.
4. To support members of the IDC and Deaf club to take part in key local consultation and decision making forums with the aim of ensuring Deaf issues are addressed and mainstreamed.
5. To establish relationships with key statutory and voluntary sector organisations in order to raise the profile of the project and Deaf issues and ensure effective partnership working.
6. In conjunction with the IDC and Deaf club submit funding applications to increase the organisation’s future sustainability.

Outcomes:
• Increased knowledge and take up of welfare benefits, housing and community care entitlements by Deaf club members and wider Deaf community
• Increased knowledge of local service provision, entitlements and rights by Deaf Club members
• Reduced social isolation amongst Deaf club members
• Increased self advocacy opportunities and skills amongst Deaf club members
• Increased profile for Deaf issues and more effective user led consultation with Deaf community

This job position is for a Deaf/Hard of Hearing Person who use high level of British Sign Language.

Please note that the applicant will have hold a NVQ Level 3 British Sign Language or equivalent to this level. This person already achieved an undergraduate degree or higher.

We are very pleased to tell you -about the time!

The Government been attending to New York today

to ratified International Treaty: UN Convention on

Right of People with Disabilities ALSO Deaf!

Fanstanic!

IDC on history that Betty (Chairperson), myself

and IDC been lots of meetings for human rights

campaign for make sure our rights are match

to equality.

We first become very interested in this Treaty

in 2006. We asked details about International

Treaty wow very important to us. We want

these rights! IDC been asking for our Islington MP

Jeremy Corbyn MP to sign with International Treaty

and he did asked the Parliament with questions

and got the answers.

The Government says they will sign the Treaty,

then finally they did in March 2007. We

realise that it is only signed which means only

support these principles from the Govenment.

Not enough. Only signed. There is no law

changing at all. We IDC kept going and

campaign these to the Government.

Today the Government officially ratified

which means our rights we can use now -

high standard. We can tell the Government

to comply with the Treaty. If the government

ignore, we can use this treaty to show them!

What rights will we have? (Briefly)

1. Right to expression, your views and opinions

in Sign Language. Access to Information in

BSL. Right to your linquistic identity of Deaf

Community. It is YOURS identity that proud!

2. Access to BSL Teachers, Interpreters

3. MOST IMPORTANT - Deaf Children - access to

billigualism - first language BSL and English.

If you want more information, you can read the

Convention, or you can contact IDC.

This means IDC been successful campaign

on this issue. But we have more action to

make this happen.

Hello. My name is Betty. I am a chairperson.

One thing surprised - A big Good News! When I went on the holiday for three weeks. A letter was placed at the desk for a while. Do not know what the letter contain until I come back to arrive my home. I asked myself "What is that?" A postmark from Charity Commission. I open the letter and it stated 5th August 2008.

I am very pleased IDC has passed!! IDC has been passed!! It become a registered Charity! The number is 115... No, sorry... 1125364...Yes.

Now it is registered and spread to the public, now it is on Internet. It is spreading everywhere that IDC is first Deaf Charity recorded in the history in Islington! In long history, there were deaf groups in Islington but never registered as a Charity. Nothing.

Now IDC has progessed to achieved lots of steps. I am very pleased I really took as a vision. I really want to say thank you to all deaf community for support to IDC, and in return IDC strongly support to them! I thank you to all of our Trustees has been confident and I wish to congratrations to all of them. They can! They can look inside within themselves exploring that they have confidence they can do it! Do not matter their intelligence whether they are highly or low. Do not matter! All are human beings!

I like to raise as a topic. I WISH...LIKE I REALLY WISH DEAF TRADITIONS SUCH AS DEAF CULTURE, SIGN LANGUAGE TO PASSED IN STEPS IN STRONG SENSE IN A LONG WAY. That is what I wish it to be happen.

I am really happy everyone Deaf can be confident saying "I can do it!" and move forward. When this happens, in future the society/social will be improved greatly.

Deaf genes - we keep deaf genes Why? In the future within deaf tradition sense.

I am really pleased! Thank you! In next time periods, we will continue to get IDC growing bigger. Now I am really happy!

Within my own heart, I will give to you deaf community to be more confidence.

Ah, I forget to mention extra information. I wish to discuss few points now.

I aim:

1. Deaf Children to learn and communicate in Sign Language better in Education.

2. Old people will get better access for their better health

3. I need to get BSL (British Sign Language) Charter to be adopted and passed. I want this.

Now I have look back and wondered. Oh yeah it is really important to focus on deaf children and also protect themselves how to be Deaf (independently sense). Need to focus on that. Mothers and Fathers do not know how to protect/communicate deaf children. Both sides kept missing information on two way communication. This become an issue affecting deaf children's psychological implications.

These visions I want to achieve.

I have research and read the International Treaty on Human Rights - Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). Now researching and will soon annouce on the Blog with information in BSL, again on the Blog.

Job Description: Deaf Development Worker
Reporting to IDC Management Committee.

Salary for 1 part time deaf development worker - NJC Scale 5 Spinal Point 11 at £24,441.90 per annum (Pro-Rata) for 22.5 hours / 3 days per week ( including 12.8% emp NICs, ILW and 5% pension) - £14,992.95

Aim

To set up a Islington Deaf club that will enable Deaf people in Islington to come together to tackle social isolation, exclusion and discrimination by providing information and advice on key welfare, housing and community care entitlements, create opportunities for mutual support and self advocacy and campaign on Deaf issues.

Objectives

The Deaf Development Worker will meet the following project objectives:

1. To work with the Islington Deaf Campaign to set up a borough wide Islington Deaf Club. The club will meet at least monthly and provide a range of activities including: information exchanges, guest speakers, social events, information and advice sessions and training opportunities for members.
2. To carry out a rolling programme of outreach work with the Deaf community to publicise the club and ensure it is providing the types of activities and services Deaf people need.
3. To support and service the Islington Deaf Campaign (IDC) and the enable it to provide strategic leadership of the project.
4. To support members of the IDC and Deaf club to take part in key local consultation and decision making forums with the aim of ensuring Deaf issues are addressed and mainstreamed.
5. To establish relationships with key statutory and voluntary sector organisations in order to raise the profile of the project and Deaf issues and ensure effective partnership working.
6. In conjunction with the IDC and Deaf club submit funding applications to increase the organisation’s future sustainability.

Key milestones, outputs and outcomes

June 08: Recruit and induct Deaf worker

Outcomes:

• Increased knowledge and take up of welfare benefits, housing and community care entitlements by Deaf club members and wider Deaf community
• Increased knowledge of local service provision, entitlements and rights by Deaf Club members
• Reduced social isolation amongst Deaf club members
• Increased self advocacy opportunities and skills amongst Deaf club members
• Increased profile for Deaf issues and more effective user led consultation with Deaf community

This job position is for a Deaf/Hard of Hearing Person who use high level of British Sign Language.

Please note that the applicant will have hold a NVQ Level 3 British Sign Language or equivalent to this level. This person already achieved an undergraduate degree or higher.

This mean evidence it was fanastic march. 6 Stewards (volunteers) thank you. Also, interpreter Frances. Thank you.

How to get in Prime Minister 10 Downing Street. Should be 6 as a group, but 3 have dropped out. baby was not able to go as it was raining. Battery for camera was flat out. Me, Frances as volunteer interpreter, and See Hear got in Number 10. That is why. We got petitions to hand. Only few deaf people stayed. Some deaf people have gone because it was raining. So some deaf people stayed, I gave speech, then finished. I have contacted Police what conclusion. Police says that we were good behaviour.

This letter proposed. In November 2007, Baroness Deech annouced Clause 14 that deaf is prevented by this clause. But many of deaf people in deaf community did not know what is going on. In January we were shocked to find out. Then we start to contact pvarious of sources. It was rush but worked out what to do, contact people. Action, Action, Action. 4 months, then a March on 12 April. 4 months was a very hard working.

Negative:-

Have few items. One deaf person feedback want to donate money in a box for lobbying. I have been replied sorry our constitution not allowed for this. You can go our website and donate. It is allowed. Or you can go to bank and write account number to send to us, specific as "March".

Constitution is not allowed for donate box, I apologise.

Secondly, March, what weather it was? Rainy only few. 5 to 10 minutes. That is it. Same as myself were wet (clothes).

Lastly, wolverhampton large group want to come to march. But one person from wolverhampton said to them No, it is for disabled. That is wrong information.
That is his responsibility for wrong infomation. Deaf should ask them questions.

Other person been asked me, I understand. He was confused about march. In facebook, deaf person from stop eugencis been told him not go to march as focus on all HFEB Bill. NOT TRUE.

I have been told the same information as below vlogs all are Clear. I propose you to look Prime Minister as previous vlogs.

Other person lastly told, Stop Eugenics has been lot negative lots of abuses against us. Same as deaf professionals pulling down to the bottom. One organisation in the march, but no other organisations come to support. Nothing. None supported us. I am disappointed.

Police has been phoned BDA and been asked about the march. BDA not supported the march. But Police has fully supported us for the march. Thank you to the Police.

2. Car Park

Police has been explained to us, we understood. Not allow to park on two red lines, two yellow lines. On one yellow line, it is possible to park, but please see instructions on pole, depend on what time and whether it is free to park. No problem, there are parking in Westminister area. No problem.

3. Trafaglar Square is Cancelled.

The rally is now moved to Richmond Terrance. This is meet there, as you know it is opposite of 10 Downing Street. Richmond Terrance area. It has been agreed and it is free area. It is good for me to stand up on stool, and give lecture. Police have been give permission for this. It has been agreed.

Parents with deaf children has not been informed us about 10 Downing Street. I have been disappointed they not informed us to come to Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street. I and the interpreter will go to 10 Downing Street. I have been disappointed mothers of deaf children not informed us nothing.

Lastly, tomorrow See you at the march! Meet where? Waterloo station exit 5, you can see Cafe called Azzuro. More easy to find, with large space with deaf people in the area. Some deaf people want to come earlier at 11.00, or 11.30pm.

We organisers meet volunteers at 11.00 so we will have a meeting with stewards (volunteers). We will share very important information. Then the stewards will give exact information where the procession start, ensure procession moving.

Hello. I would like to clarify, Thank you for all deaf people have been feedback to me. Learning to improve. I need to know so we can improve better. Thank you all.

Two things. Firstly, you see why we said children, wonder what? We want to take children to the Downing Street, with 6 children to show to Prime Minister. Prime Minister need to see children as Deaf, make him realise. Relating to Deaf Genes issues. For the future. That is why.

I need to ask permission of mothers, allow to take the children to there. Also we have an interpreter (volunteer) to come with us to communicate with them.

Secondly, why we do need Petition? Petiton is very important. Why, we need all petition to be collected, then final report on the top, then we get and hand in Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street.

That is two things.

I now inform you you can download the petition from the Blog, you will see right of the screen, you can press it and download the petition. Do not worrry about the deadline, it will be on 12 April.

We are looking for volunteers, wear white stripe. Steward (volunter) encourage people on street safety, give information on the march. What does it involves, ensure the information is same for all. Steward can calm down for some people who get frustrated, and support to them.

Steward (wear white stripe) will work with the Police to ensure the march is go smoothly. If there is communication breakdown, you have to carry on march. Police will have their own interpreter. Do not worry, we will support you.

If you have any problem, please let me know. Because I am responsibility as a leader. If volunteer have any problem, we will have a person who responsibility for volunteers. I will introduce this person.

You are welcome to Islington Town Hall today for Deaf Genes Debate. Start 6pm. You are very welcome. It will be in Chamber. 6pm to 8pm. 2 hours debate. This is for wanting to know what deaf genes, what volunteer involves, and relate to mother of deaf children. Deaf can ask questions. Welcome to our debate it is important. We have been in City Lit yesterday with IDC stool with information.

At 4th Floor 413 room.

You can visit us and can ask any question, about Volunteers or how the information about the march or anything else.

Yesterday I have met about 10 or 12 deaf people. But today you need information, it is last day. Really Big sorry to inform you last minute.

2. March

What does it involves? Remember what people can wear? Better wear blue clothes (top). We will wear blue clothes when go on march.

It is remind of Deaf Culture, deaf history, and keep deaf tradition. It is the Colour BLUE.

1. We are demanding the Government to abolish the Clause 14(4)(8-9) and hide references in the Bill relating to Deaf.

2. Demanding for a British Sign Language Act, to legally framework to recognise BSL as official language. You already know there is Wales Language Act 1993 has been recognised and should be same for UK.

3. Stopping the Government to introduce in policy deaf children going to mainstream, and closing deaf schools. Did you know that there is only 4,000 deaf children in UK, number largely reduced? Shocking! Thanks to Jill Jones from DEX lecture at BDA AGM in Bristol. Need deaf school back!

Firstly, it was sent to my private email and personal, and should

Secondly, Stop Eugenics can easily leave a message on IDC Blog if they

Thirdly, Jen's vlog show no name of who is protestors for the march,
and did not credit "Islington Deaf Campaign" or refer to IDC's work

Add Information: Stop Eugencis not accept the comment and avoiding to put the post on the website, Why? I have been reminding them. seems the StopEugenics and IDC not working well together. Stop Eugenics as a group seems to be favouritism. I really object to StopEugenics for FAVOURITISM. All of us are HUMAN BEING as SAME. To discuss one topic, Deaf Genes is powerful painfully needed to be discussed. Very concerned. You will see copy of the email (above).

On 13th January I have been offered StopEugenics, but they do not offered back. I have been offered 1. website address url, as publicity. 2. they wont accept moderation comment. I have really shocked at their efforts. FACT, REAL they have brushed us off. They run as one organisation only as "mine". That is a real problem now become massive. Need to share information as organisations work together. Focus what? On Deaf Genes. THIS IS.

I am inside deepest not happy with StopEugenics. Seems they have specific connections and focus on connections, and ignore us as organisation. I have shocked.

I need to add one thing, on 15th March I have been went to Bristol for two lecturers. 1, how to identify the law ? 2, how the deaf mainstream has been created, the Bristol board can analysis how the Wales Language Act been successful, so Bristol should similar copy for a BSL Act. See the picture Jill Jones been lecture. One issue have greatly impacted me that Jill say in UK only there is 4,000 deaf children. That is it.

I have shocked. See, deaf organisations have criticised with each other, need to stop and start to focus on 4,000 deaf children. I have concerned about 4,000 deaf children. How to improve this situation?

Have to watch to the Government and lobbying to them. You all have to think about it.

That is why we aim the march for 3 conditions. March! That is why we all deaf people together to march, unity! Don’t matter if it is Deaf, deaf with speech, Deaf with signing, Deaf with SSE, various. All together, all. Want to unity! This will show campaigning to the Government.

Example, BDA, RNID, etc lots of them are competition but nothing is unity. It seems!

All of them have right to be unity! Please deaf community need to change attitudes. Need to watch the Government.

Now it will be future to be worse, worse, worse, the Government will cut something. You all Deaf community need to wake up. That is why, we have to determine.

I want to vision that deaf children, confident to use beautiful sign language, will influence to all. Now, at 17 century, long time ago there were 60% were Deaf. Now 10%. Now deaf community become less, less. That is it. Now it is less. I do not want Deaf community to be like that! Want these deaf to have been keep tradition continue to be a community. Deaf History. Deaf Culture. Deaf Community. Stay Stronger.

Hello Islington Deaf Campaign, hope you are all well. I will concluse list of things I will provide in this vlog. I now need to start to show (announcement) House of Lords

This note means genetics in House of Lords has been discussed and bad attitudes from Lords [regarding deaf], embryos are been found as deaf deformed genes will be removed. Now I am considering, look at the picture

That is what means that who are really famous, world genius in astronomy physics. His disability is deformed but his genes were not removed, but compare to deaf yes.

I want to launch a demonstration march in 1st week of April. Wednesday or Saturday. If you want to feedback which Wednesday or Saturday is best? Why Wednesday, there is regular meeting from Prime Minister Questions, demonstration can be shown by MPs and Lords outside. Or Saturday we can continue on a march but MPs or Lords not working on Saturday. Your opinions please feedback to us.

I will plan to provide petition form and launch within this blog with the form. Please can you fill the petition form and give to anyone the petition form in UK with information. Please fill with your address, post code and signatures, all on the form and send back to us.

When I collect all and I will count the petition, and I will announce the count of people sign on the petition. The government are interested to demands more than 2,000 people signatures. When I got all and we will meet the MP in Parliament, Health MP and give to them.

I am serious to take this responsibility and focus action move on, not off the point; I am direct to the point. 1. Deaf genes removed, 2. BSL Rights, 3. Education for deaf children, it is very important because many mainstream schools and increasing more and deaf special schools disappeared.

That is why you all need to go back and start to march!

I have been researching, from a book that Paddy Ladd wrote, “Understanding Deaf Culture”, Paddy has research deaf culture, many things we both agree, but there are some new information, interesting it is Paddy’s opinion are different from my opinions, it is my views.

I have been research on “deaf”, I thought it was good word. No, have to be careful with this word. Deaf. What does it means? It is same as Deafness. It is a medical word. Mind like stupid, can’t hear like stupid. Two of them.

I want to describe Deafmute. That is who you are, as a person. That seems is very positive attitude, it is not negative. In deaf community they thought it is negative. No, it is not. Why? It is Hearing control influence all, it is “COLONISATION”.

It does means many deaf people become low confidence, lots of million deaf people all over. Where is confidence and strong? Nothing. Please come back build confidence. All Deaf back to demonstration march.

March will definitely on April. I already discussed with Police and agree to arrange for this march. They need registration so what is why you please feedback what date, time do you want us to march. (In April). When you feedback to say specifics, then I will provide another vlog to say definite details.

Please I say at the moment I do not have office. We got limit budget. Soon we will get our office then we will let you know. We are on the way to get funding but not yet, it will be in April.

We want demonstration march now. If you want to donate, please do, we will provide details on website. Donation, it does not means we do not keep money for other reasons. It is for demonstration march. It is separate issue, we will use financial recording. We got funding which focus on community; we use the HSBC account which is for Islington Deaf Campaign which Committee manage only. Some of them, we can use it for demonstration march (evidence record to show separate). It is Honest. If you want to donate and do that, we will make sure that your name is recorded and announced in financial statement show your support. If we have more money left after spending, then we will keep the money for next year demonstration march again.

RNID comment on IVF embryo debate - 11 January 2008

Commenting ahead of the reading of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill in the House of Lords on Tuesday 15 January 2008, Jackie Ballard, RNID chief executive, said:

"Decisions about which embryo to implant are for parents and their clinicians, but RNID does not support the selection of a deaf embryo for IVF implantation where a hearing embryo is available.

"Where deaf or hearing parents have deaf children with or without IVF treatment, RNID would of course unconditionally support the child and their family.

"However we do not agree with the creation of designer babies by proactive selection for deafness or any other attribute.

"We will be working with MPs to ensure that no deaf parent feels under any pressure to have their embryos screened during IVF treatment, and ensure proper communication support is in place so parents can make an informed decision."
